What's a docent?
Volunteer docents are curious, enthusiastic learners who guide visitors through the museum using thoughtful questions and open conversation. They encourage each group to look closely, share what they notice, and form their own connections with art. No art degree or museum experience is required.
Become a docent at Memphis Art Museum
As Memphis Art Museum prepares to open its new downtown home on December 6, the museum is accepting applications for its next class of volunteer docents. Interviews will take place this winter, with training beginning in February 2027. As the first docent class trained in the new museum, this group will help define the visitor experience in its downtown home, bringing Memphis’ art collection to life for people from across the city and around the world.
Docents receive free, university-level training that includes art history coursework taught by a University of Memphis professor, gallery sessions with museum curators and experienced docents, and practical instruction in leading engaging discussions.
Upcoming Docent Training Courses
School tour docent training begins Wednesday, February 3 and ends on Friday, May 14, 2027. Sessions are on Wednesdays and Fridays from 1:30-3:30pm
Public tour docent training begins on Thursday, February 4 and ends on Sunday, May 23, 2027. Sessions are on Thursday evenings from 6-7:30pm and Sundays from 1:30-3:30pm.
What is the commitment?
A successful docent will complete all course assignments and give a sample tour to a member of the education staff at the end of the training course. Each docent is asked to make a two-year commitment and to conduct a minimum of 15 scheduled tours a year. In addition, attendance at monthly training meetings is required.
Who is a docent?
Prior experience or an art background is not required. Anyone who has an interest in art and lifelong learning can be a docent. Though museum docents are as diverse as the artwork they present, they share the following:

- A passion for learning and teaching
- An ability to communicate effectively
- Enthusiasm, Creativity, and Flexibility
