This exhibition explores vessels and navigation as metaphors for the containment and transmission of knowledge. From religious doctrine and scientific theories to historical narratives and ancient philosophies, the works presented consider how ideas spread to the far reaches of the world through migration and other journeys. Diaspora–the forced or voluntary movement of people away from an established or ancestral homeland–figures prominently in these works. Featured are paintings, sculpture, and works on paper from the 1960s through the present that boldly traverse global territories, both geographical and conceptual.

Dr. Patricia Lee Daigle

Patricia Lee Daigle is the Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art at the Memphis Brooks Museum of Art. She previously served as Director of The Martha and Robert Fogelman Galleries of Contemporary Art at the University of Memphis and Curatorial Assistant in Contemporary Art at the Santa Barbara Museum of Art. Daigle received her Ph.D. in the History of Art and Architecture from the University of California, Santa Barbara.
