Providing social commentary and preserving cultural meaning through language, the Memphis-based designer Eso Tolson’s uplifting hand lettering has been a fixture in the city for years. In this installation, the phrase “Memphis Been Waiting for You,” seen in segments, shifts playfully depending on the viewer’s vantage point. The bold immediacy of the typeface evokes the city’s dynamism and unapologetic stance. The vibrant colorways celebrate Memphis as a city comprised of distinct neighborhoods, people, and experiences, each with their own unique identities. Individually, they stand on their own. Together, they create a single, unified statement.
